Webinar Wednesday: Brian McFarlin, Ph.D., from the University of North Texas

Detection of Pre-Clinical Disease Risk using Multiplex Serum Biomarker

This year, we’re launching Webinar Wednesday – a day dedicated to sharing diverse work of the xMAP® multiplexing community. We’ll highlight pre-recorded webinars from the xMAP Connect users group meetings in Boston and Amsterdam, as well as live webinars featuring xMAP enthusiasts, Luminex field application scientists, and Luminex partners.

We’re kicking off this weekly series with a talk from Brian McFarlin, Ph.D., who was the proud owner of the 3rd MAGPIX® sold by MilliporeSigma. Dr. McFarlin is an Associate Professor and the Co-Director of the Applied Physiology Laboratory at the University of North Texas.

His research focuses on two main areas:

  • The physiological and immunologic consequences of weight gain and loss, and
  • The use of nutritional countermeasures to improve immune health and reduce chronic disease

In this 30-minute webinar, you’ll learn about the acute human feeding model, which Dr. McFarlin developed to better understand the development of atherosclerosis. He’ll discuss how he studied the cumulative effects of:

  • Lifestyle = poor dietary habits, physical inactivity
  • Biologic changes = dietary endotoxicity, obesity, systemic inflammation
  • Cellular changes = pro-inflammatory monocytes, modified LDLs, foam cells

He uses xMAP Technology to track the biomarker response to nutritional interventions, such as dietary polyphenols, probiotics, prebiotics, and other nutraceuticals.
