The Faces of Luminex: Caleb White, Sales

Molecular diagnostics labs have specific needs, and our Molecular Diagnostics Sales Team members are experts in understanding how our products fit into unique workflows and testing environments. Caleb White, Molecular Sales Effectiveness Manager, ensures that our newest Sales Team members get up to speed with the training they need to provide an excellent customer experience. He’s been with Luminex since 2011 and holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Roberts Wesleyan College.

Q: What are your responsibilities at Luminex?

A: I’m responsible for the onboarding, training, and sales enablement for the Americas Molecular Diagnostics Sales Team. I assist with onboarding new salespeople from the interview process through training. I connect them with all the team members they’ll interact with at Luminex—Legal, Sales Support, Technical Services, HR, and more. I check in regularly as they go through field-based training and then provide a deeper dive into the product content in a classroom-style setting.

Q: How did you get into this kind of work?

A: My first real job out of college was working in consumer lending with a subsidiary of HSBC. My first job in medical sales was with Polymedco, which sold fecal occult blood tests. After that, I went to Nanosphere.

Q: What drew you to Luminex?

A: I came to Luminex through its acquisition of Nanosphere. I was proud to be part of this acquisition as Luminex presented the opportunity to work with great people and to be at the forefront of rapid diagnostic testing for blood cultures.

Q: If you could solve any clinical or genetic challenge, what would it be?

A: I’m most passionate about septicemia. Bloodstream infections hit close to home for me. I watched the market transform from culture to rapid results, and I saw and heard feedback from physicians and pharmacists on how they saved lives as a result of this technology. It was very rewarding and something I’ll always be proud of. A septic patient is typically the most critical patient in the hospital, and VERIGENE® results changed the speed to optimal therapy.

Q: If you weren’t a manager at Luminex, where would you be?

A: I originally wanted to be a prosecutor. I took my LSAT and got accepted to law school. But at the time, I was dating my now-wife, and we were already dating long-distance. I didn’t think I could be a newlywed and a law student. It was a Good Will Hunting thing—I had to see about a girl.

Q: What is something about you that no one at Luminex knows?

A: I’m pretty big into saltwater fish tanks. I dabbled in them when I first got married 15 years ago, but it was a challenging hobby because proper filtration and other important technologies didn’t exist back then. Now, I have three boys, and one that is interested in science also wanted a pet. I knew how to put together a fish tank, so I figured we’d start with that. Now we have a 120-gallon reef tank with tropical fish and all kinds of coral.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to do on the weekend?

A: I like to spend time with my kids at whatever sporting event they are participating in—wrestling, baseball, or football. If that’s not happening, my wife and I try to find a local coffee shop and hang out.
