A Laboratory’s Perspective: How the University of Louisville Infectious Diseases Lab Leverages Molecular Testing

Luminex has been out on the road, talking to customers, and capturing videos to help get the word out about how our technology can help empower labs to obtain reliable, timely, and actionable answers, ultimately advancing health.

Meet the University of Louisville Infectious Diseases Laboratory

The University of Louisville Infectious Diseases Laboratory (U of L ID Lab) is a university-based, CLIA-certified, high-complexity reference laboratory, offering testing services related to the diagnosis of infectious diseases.

The lab differentiates itself through excellent customer service and personal relationships. Moreover, they bring a unique value to their community by providing esoteric testing that would otherwise need to be sent to larger reference labs.

Since its founding in 1971, the U of L ID Lab has built its reputation on personal relationships with hospital staff and by delivering quality results with faster turnaround times. When customers call into the lab, they speak with the specialists running the tests, and many times this will include the laboratory director. This dialogue allows the lab to gain a better understanding of each patient’s background, helping to deliver a higher quality result to the physician, which is rare for a reference hospital.

Molecular Testing at the U of L ID Lab

The U of L ID Lab and Luminex have a long-standing relationship that began nearly ten years ago with the adoption of a multiplex respiratory assay that used xTAG® Technology. Over the years, the lab has adopted additional Luminex Systems, with the ARIES® System being the most recent. ARIES® has given them the flexibility to expand their test menu and develop their own tests to support their local medical community.

The partnership between U of L ID Lab and Luminex goes further still. In recent years, the technical team from Luminex has helped the lab foster relationships with other medical institutions from across the country with similar interests in research and test development. Connecting with this community and learning how its peers are using the ARIES® System has helped U of L ID Lab to develop their own tick-borne assay.

The relationship between University of Louisville Infectious Diseases Laboratory and Luminex is an excellent example of medical professionals and industry working collaboratively to improve patient care.
