The flow cytometry portfolio acquired from Merck Millipore is the latest addition to the Luminex technology family. We count on team members like Sahran Hussain, QA Associate, to ensure that customers are getting the highest-quality instruments and kits. He joined the Seattle-based flow cytometry team last year and holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Q: What are your responsibilities at Luminex?
A: I deal with regulatory and project management a lot — for example, I’m managing the rebranding tasks for the recently acquired instruments, manuals, and kits. I also follow up with customer feedback to troubleshoot malfunctioning systems. I work in the biology lab as well, preparing kits that customers purchase. I wear a lot of hats, but it keeps me on my toes.
Q: What did you do before this job?
A: I was working in Atlanta as a Program Coordinator at a medical center. I was in charge of developing schedules and immunotherapy treatments for patients.
Q: What drew you to Merck Millipore?
A: It was honestly a fluke. I always wanted to go into biotech and happened to be visiting family in Seattle when I got an interview. Afterwards, I picked up and moved here. Now, in addition to this work, I’m also getting my master’s degree in biotechnology.
Q: If you weren’t a system specialist at Luminex, where would you be?
A: I also like aerospace engineering and considered that as a career path – both my dad and my brother have worked in that field – but I realized I liked chemistry more.
Q: If you could solve any clinical or genetic challenge, what would it be?
A: For me personally, it would be breast cancer because that hits home the most. My mom and my grandma are both breast cancer survivors.
Q: What is something about you that no one at Luminex knows?
A: European soccer is the only thing I watch on TV. My favorite team is Manchester United. I’ve been playing soccer all my life, including a year in college.
Q: What is your favorite thing to do in Seattle on the weekend?
A: Taking my dogs on a hike. There are some really good trails and viewpoints in the Seattle area.
