It takes a special level of attention to detail to thrive in the challenging but much-needed field of quality control. That talent is exemplified by Silvia Macwan, Lead Reagent Quality Control Associate, who has been with us since 2014. She earned her bachelor’s degree in biotechnology from Sardar Patel University in India and her post-secondary diploma from Centennial College in Canada.
Q: What are your responsibilities at Luminex?
A: I handle quality control processes associated with the reagent department. I also participate in QC processes to support new product design transfer, process development, process validations, equipment validations, and the investigation and resolution of product or process issues. In the reagent group, production is fast-paced. We change priorities every day or even every few hours, and I like tackling all those different things.
Q: How did you get into a career in quality control?
A: I always wanted to work in the biotechnology field, but after earning my degree my first job was working in a food company as a quality control technician. That’s where I realized I really enjoyed working in quality control. I like being detail-oriented and efficient.
Q: What drew you to Luminex?
A: When I moved to the U.S. from Canada, I was searching for biotechnology companies because that’s my main interest. When I learned about Luminex, I was very interested in and impressed by their technology. My husband and I really liked the geography and climate of Austin too.
Q: If you could solve any clinical or genetic challenge, what would it be?
A: I would love to solve the great mysteries of allergies. I didn’t know much about allergies until I moved to Austin. Fortunately, I haven’t gotten any yet, but so many of my friends suffer from them.
Q: What is something about you that no one at Luminex knows?
A: I’m very passionate about craft work and painting. Recently I made a welcome banner for a safari-themed birthday party!
Q: If you weren’t at Luminex, where would you be?
A: I would run a small boutique. I actually make designer clothes and some custom-designed gifts for parties.
Q: What is your favorite thing to do in Austin on the weekend?
A: My husband and I both love being out in nature, especially biking and hiking around the various trails here.
