Luminex Employees Build, Donate Bikes to Local Children in Need

Team-building event brought out the kid in us, too

This month, our marketing, sales, and customer operations teams participated in a great exercise that not only brought them together, but also benefited underprivileged kids right here in the Austin area. The team-building program culminated in building children’s bikes, which were then donated to the Boys & Girls Club of Austin.

This was a major event, and we had such a great time that we couldn’t wait to share it with our blog readers. More than 100 Luminex team members from all over the world took part, which presented potential language and cultural challenges that had to be overcome from the start. Throughout the day, teams participated in various challenges and contests to earn parts to build each bike.

Once 25 bikes were built, we got the chance to test them out (since we’re not professional bike builders, we figured this was an important step to make sure our efforts would stand up to real use). Thus ensued the Bicycle Marketing Campaigns, where each team attempted to market their newly built bicycles to the audience in a series of hilarious skits.

While the Luminex team thoroughly enjoyed the event, the highlight for most people was getting to see the kids come pick out their new bicycles. As Allison Leone, Marketing Manager for the Americas, put it, “It was a moment of pure joy, and it felt great to know that this gift will impact the lives of many children. The inspirational signs attached to the bikes made the experience even more fruitful.” Reid Sadler, General Manager for the Americas, said, “It was a heartwarming experience that will stick with me for a while.”

We all know that team-building exercises can sometimes be a drag (trust fall, anyone?), but this program was entertaining, motivational, and memorable. As Carla Schmiedeler, Area Business Director for Commercial Operations, told us, “The event was important because it gave us all the opportunity to work together on a project that was not only fun, but also gave something of value back to the community.”
